John Deere Temperature Sensor Location and Function

A temperature sensor is a device that measures the temperature of a system or a component. It converts the temperature into an electrical signal that can be displayed on a gauge or used by a controller. Temperature sensors are important for monitoring and regulating the performance of diesel engines, as they can prevent overheating, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions.

John Deere is a leading manufacturer of agricultural and construction equipment, as well as diesel engines for various applications. John Deere diesel engines have different types and locations of temperature sensors, depending on the model and configuration. Some of the common temperature sensors found on John Deere diesel engines are:

  • Coolant temperature sensor: This sensor measures the temperature of the engine coolant, which circulates through the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and cylinder head. The coolant temperature sensor is usually located on the top or side of the cylinder head, near the thermostat housing. The coolant temperature sensor sends a signal to the instrument panel, which displays the coolant temperature gauge. It also sends a signal to the engine control unit (ECU), which adjusts the fuel injection, ignition timing, and fan speed according to the coolant temperature. If the coolant temperature is too high, the ECU will activate the warning light and reduce the engine power to prevent damage.
  • Oil temperature sensor: This sensor measures the temperature of the engine oil, which lubricates the moving parts of the engine. The oil temperature sensor is usually located on the oil filter base or the oil pan. The oil temperature sensor sends a signal to the instrument panel, which displays the oil temperature gauge. It also sends a signal to the ECU, which adjusts the fuel injection and ignition timing according to the oil temperature. If the oil temperature is too high, the ECU will activate the warning light and reduce the engine power to prevent damage.
  • Air intake temperature sensor: This sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine through the air filter and the turbocharger. The air intake temperature sensor is usually located on the intake manifold or the air inlet pipe. The air intake temperature sensor sends a signal to the ECU, which adjusts the fuel injection and the turbocharger boost pressure according to the air intake temperature. If the air intake temperature is too high, the ECU will reduce the fuel injection and the boost pressure to prevent knocking and pre-ignition.
