Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 001-031   Gear Cover, Front

The ISX11.9 has two front cover options, non-hydraulic drive and hydraulic drive. The hydraulic drive front gear cover is larger and provides accommodations for a second idler gear to drive a hydraulic pump mounted at the lower end of the gear housing.

Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
  • Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Remove the cooling fan. Refer to Procedure 008-040 in Section 8.
  • Remove the fan hub pulley. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Remove any clips used to secure and route the wiring harness.

NOTE: This section is for the hydraulic drive front gear cover option.

Remove the remaining gear cover mounting capscrews and remove the gear cover.

NOTE: Mark the location of any studded capscrews to properly locate the mounting hardware.

Remove and discard the press-in seal.

NOTE: This section is for the non-hydraulic drive front gear cover option.

Remove the remaining gear cover mounting capscrews and remove the gear cover.

NOTE: Mark the location of any studded capscrews to properly locate the mounting hardware.

Remove and discard the press-in seal.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

 WARNING 

When using a steam cleaner, wear safety glasses or a face shield, as well as protective clothing. Hot steam can cause serious personal injury.
 WARNING 

Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal injury.

Use steam or solvent to clean the gear cover.

Dry with compressed air.

Inspect the gear cover for cracks, dents, and other damage.

Replace the cover if it has contacted the gear.

Replace the cover if it is cracked.

Replace the cover if the sealing flange surface is damaged or bent in a manner that could possibly create a leak path.

Inspect the flange surface and seal groove of the front gear housing for damage.

If the housing is damaged, repair or replace the gear housing. Refer to Procedure 001-033 in Section 1.

NOTE: This section is for the hydraulic drive front gear cover option.

Install a new press-in seal into the groove on the front of the gear housing.

Align the formed shape of the seal to match the groove in the gear cover and press the seal into place. Be sure the locating tabs mate with the notches in the groove.

Install the gear cover and mounting capscrews.

Install the studded capscrews into locations marked during removal.

Tighten the capscrews for the hydraulic drive gear housing in the sequence in the illustrated.

Torque Value:

Hydraulic Drive Gear Housing  20  n.m  [177 in-lb]

NOTE: This section is for the non-hydraulic drive front gear cover option.

Install a new press-in seal into the groove on the front of the gear housing.

Align the formed shape of the seal to match the groove in the gear cover and press the seal into place. Be sure the locating tabs mate with the notches in the groove.

Install the gear cover and mounting capscrews.

Install the studded capscrews into locations marked during removal.

Tighten the capscrews for the non-hydraulic drive gear housing in the sequence illustrated.

Torque Value:

Non-Hydraulic Drive Gear Housing  20  n.m  [177 in-lb]

Finishing Steps

  • Install any clips removed that secure the wiring harness.
  • Install the cooling fan. Refer to Procedure 008-040 in Section 8.
  • Connect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Operate the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.
