Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 007-037   Lubricating Oil System

If removed, install the lubricating oil pan drain plugs before priming the lubricating oil system. See the Install section in this procedure.

CAUTION  The lubricating oil system must be primed before operating the engine after any internal engine repairs or extended engine storage (beyond 6 months) to avoid internal component damage.

Bar the engine during oil priming.

Remove the plug from the lubricating oil filter head inlet port and install the fitting and hose.

Use the coupler, Part Number 3376859, to connect the priming pump to the filter head.

Connect the priming pump oil supply hose to the lubricating oil pump coupling. Use clean 15W-40 lubricating oil from a drum or a container to supply oil to the lubricating oil pump and engine.

Turn the priming pump on.

Allow the oil to flow until the oil pressure gauge indicates a maximum pressure of 69 to 138 kPa [10 to 20 psi] at the main oil rifle.

Turn the priming pump off.

Remove the priming pump oil supply hose and fitting.

Install the lubricating oil filter head inlet plug.

Check the oil level on the dipstick before adding additional oil.

If necessary, fill the engine with lubricating oil.

Clean and check the lubricating oil drain plug threads and sealing surface.

Install the lubricating oil pan drain plugs.

Use a high quality 15W-40 multiviscosity oil, such as Cummins® Premium Blue™, or equivalent, in Cummins® engines. Choose the correct oil for your operating climate. Refer to Cummins® Engine Oil and Oil Analysis Recommendations, Bulletin 3810340.

Fill the engine with clean lubricating oil to the proper level.

NOTE: Due to the slow drain down through the cylinder head, the oil system should be filled manually when filling from the top of the rocker lever cover. Additional time should be allowed before checking the oil level to allow the oil to drain down when filling from the top of the rocker lever cover before checking oil level.

Use the following procedure for oil pan capacities. Refer to Procedure 018-017 in Section V.

CAUTION  If no oil pressure is noted within 15 seconds after the engine is started, shut down the engine to reduce the possibility of internal engine damage.

Idle the engine to inspect for leaks at the drain plugs.

Shut the engine off. Wait approximately 10 minutes to let the lubricating oil from the upper parts of the engine drain back into the lubricating oil pan. Check the lubricating oil level again.

Add oil as necessary to bring the level up to the H (high) mark on the dipstick.
