This procedure covers the removal and installation of two mounting brackets used on some fan drive belt configurations. One bracket mounts to the alternator/refrigerant compressor mounting bracket on engines equipped with two alternators. The other bracket can be mounted in various locations, depending on the fan option. Not all configurations will use these brackets.
To make sure the drive belt is routed correctly upon installation, make a diagram of the belt routing prior to removing the belt.
The cooling fan belt routing typically consists of the following components, but may not include all of them.
Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
NOTE: This step is for a multi-purpose idler pulley support bracket.
NOTE: This support bracket may be mounted in a variety of locations, depending on the drive belt option. Record the location and orientation of the support bracket prior to removal.
Loosen and remove the multi-purpose idler pulley capscrew.
Remove the idler pulley, dust shield, and idler shaft.
When using solvents, acids or alkaline materials for cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the possibility of personal injury.
WARNING
Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal injury.
Clean the support brackets, idler pulleys, and idler shafts with solvents.
