The correct coolant filter to be used is determined by the total cooling system capacity and other operational factors. Use the following procedure in the ISX 11.9 Operation and Maintenance Manual, Bulletin 2883444, to select the correct coolant filter. Refer to Procedure 018-004 in Section V.

An ON/OFF valve is provided to prevent coolant leakage while changing the coolant filter.

With the valve in the ON position (1),the coolant flows to and from the coolant filter. In the OFF position (2), the coolant flow is cut off to and from the coolant filter.

Remove

 WARNING 

Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.

Remove the cooling system pressure cap.

 WARNING 

Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and pets. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.

Turn the coolant ON/OFF valve to the OFF position. Do not use force to open or close the ON/OFF valve.

Use the following procedure if the valve does not turn freely. Refer to Procedure 008-007 in Section 8.

Remove and discard the coolant filter.

Clean the gasket surface on the filter head.

Install

Apply a thin film of clean engine oil, or its equivalent, to the coolant filter gasket sealing surface before installing the coolant filter.

 CAUTION 

Mechanical overtightening can distort the threads or damage the filter head.

Install the coolant filter.

Tighten the coolant filter ½ to ¾ of a turn after initial gasket contact, or as specified by the manufacturer.

Turn the coolant ON/OFF valve to the ON (1) position.

Install the radiator pressure cap.

 WARNING 

Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.

Operate the engine until the coolant temperature is above 82°C [180°F] and check for coolant leaks.

After the air has been purged from the system, check the coolant level.
