Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 001-023   Crankshaft Seal, Front

WARNING  Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.

WARNING  This component or assembly weighs greater than 23 kg [50 lb]. To prevent serious personal injury, be sure to have assistance or use appropriate lifting equipment to lift this component or assembly.

• Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Remove the cooling fan drive belt. Refer to Procedure 008-002 in Section 1.
• Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Procedure 001-022 in Section 1.
• Remove the vibration damper. Refer to Procedure 001-052 in Section 1.

Replacement of the front crankshaft seal requires the use of a crankshaft seal replacer kit, Part Number 4918991. The crankshaft seal replacer kit contains the followoing items:

• Replacer plate
• Stud x 3
• Hex head capscrew x 2
• Self tapping capscrew x 10
• Hex nut x 3.

Position the replacer plate (1) over the end of the crankshaft and against the crankshaft seal.

Six small holes are machined into the replacer plate (1) to align the self-tapping sheet metal screws for seal removal.

Use the replacer plate (1) to position the screws.

Screw the self-tapping sheet metal screws (2) into the seal.

Install the T-bar puller, Part Number ST-647 or equivalent, onto the replacer plate.

Turn the forcing screw of the T-bar puller to remove the replacer plate and crankshaft seal from the crankshaft.

Inspect the crankshaft for nicks, burrs, and grooves. Damage to the sealing surface can result in seal leakage.

If a fingernail will catch in a nick, burr, or groove, the crankshaft must be replaced.

In order for the seal to be properly centered on the crankshaft during assembly and maintain its location during operation, the following installation instructions must be followed.

The crankshaft seal removal and installation tool correctly centers and positions the seal on the crankshaft.

Apply soapy water to the outer rubber surface of the crankshaft seal.

NOTE: No lubricants, other than soapy water, should be used when installing the front crankshaft seal.

Guide the front crankshaft seal and seal installation spacer onto the crankshaft.

NOTE: The installation spacer is used to make sure of the correction installation depth of the crankshaft seal. The larger lipped side of the spacer should contact the replacer plate.

Install the three studs from the crankshaft replacer kit, Part Number 4918991, into the end of the crankshaft.

Position the replacer plate over the three studs so that it contacts the installation spacer.

Install the washers and hex nuts onto the studs so that they contact the replacer plate.

CAUTION  The crankshaft seal must be pressed evenly. If the crankshaft seal is not pressed in evenly, the seal can be damaged.

Inspect the crankshaft seal during installation to make certain it is being pressed evenly.

Tighten the capscrew(s) no more than ½ of a revolution at a time, alternating in a clockwise pattern until the replacer plate contacts the front seal cover plate.

Tighten the hex nuts.

Remove the hex nuts, washers, replacer plate, installation spacer, and studs.

• Install the vibration damper. Refer to Procedure 001-052 in Section 1.
• Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Procedure 001-022 in Section 1.
• Install the cooling fan drive belt. Refer to Procedure 008-002 in Section 8.
• Connect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Operate the engine to normal operating temperature. Check for loose parts, leaks, and normal oil pressure.
