Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 004-001   Cam Follower Assembly

Preparatory Steps

TOC

 WARNING

Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
 WARNING

Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.
 WARNING

Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and animals. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.

Remove

TOC

There are two identical cam follower assemblies, one for cylinders 1 through 3, and one for cylinders 4 through 6.

Four capscrews hold down each of the cam follower assemblies.  Loosen the capscrews and pull each assembly out of the cylinder block.

There are dowel rings (1) located at the Number 1 and 4 capscrews of each assembly.  These dowel rings are press-fit into the cylinder block.  Make sure they stay in position after removing the cam follower assemblies.

Disassemble

TOC

Remove the capscrews, retaining clamps, and cam follower levers from the cam follower shaft.

The cam follower levers must be installed in the same location they were removed from.

Mark the retaining clamps and all of the cam followers to identify their location when they are removed.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

TOC

 WARNING

When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the possibility of personal injury.
 WARNING

Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal injury.

Clean the cam follower parts with solvent.

Dry with compressed air.

Make sure the oil passages in the cam followers and the capscrews are clean.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Inspect the cam followers for cracks or other damage.

Refer to the Camshaft Reuse Guidelines for Cummins® Engines with Roller Followers or Roller Tappets, Bulletin 3666052, for inspection criteria of cam follower rollers.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Inspect the cam follower sockets for excessive wear.

If excessive wear is found in the cam follower sockets, the push rods must be inspected. Refer to Procedure 004-014 in Section 4.

Replace all parts that do not meet the reuse guidelines.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Inspect the cam follower shafts for scores or other damage.

Make sure the plugs at each end of the shafts are in place.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Inspect the cam follower rollers for flat spots, freedom of rotation, and other damage.

NOTE: The rollers do not spin freely. They should not stick in one position; however, they will not spin continuously.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Measure the cam follower roller side clearance.

Cam Follower Roller Side Clearance

mm in
0.19 MIN 0.007
0.65 MAX 0.026

The cam followers are not serviceable. If the roller side clearance does not meet the specification, the cam follower must be replaced.

Install

TOC

Before installing the cam follower assemblies, the cylinder head deck must be cleaned. Refer to Procedure 002-004 in Section 2.

Capscrews Number 1 and 4 on each shaft are doweled. The capscrews must align with the dowel rings in the cylinder block.

Install the cam follower assemblies into the cylinder block.

NOTE: Hand-tighten the mounting capscrews at this time. The cam follower side clearance must be adjusted before the capscrews are tightened to their final torque value.
