Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
WARNING
Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.
WARNING
Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and animals. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.
Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
There are two identical cam follower assemblies, one for cylinders 1 through 3, and one for cylinders 4 through 6.
Four capscrews hold down each of the cam follower assemblies. Loosen the capscrews and pull each assembly out of the cylinder block.
There are dowel rings (1) located at the Number 1 and 4 capscrews of each assembly. These dowel rings are press-fit into the cylinder block. Make sure they stay in position after removing the cam follower assemblies.
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the possibility of personal injury.
WARNING
Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal injury.
Clean the cam follower parts with solvent.
Dry with compressed air.
Make sure the oil passages in the cam followers and the capscrews are clean.
Inspect the cam followers for cracks or other damage.
Refer to the Camshaft Reuse Guidelines for Cummins® Engines with Roller Followers or Roller Tappets, Bulletin 3666052, for inspection criteria of cam follower rollers.
Capscrews Number 1 and 4 on each shaft are doweled. The capscrews must align with the dowel rings in the cylinder block.
Install the cam follower assemblies into the cylinder block.
NOTE: Hand-tighten the mounting capscrews at this time. The cam follower side clearance must be adjusted before the capscrews are tightened to their final torque value.
Check the clearance between the Number 3 clamp and the intake lever for the Number 3 cylinder. There must be a nominal clearance of 0.30 mm [0.012 in].
Check the clearance between the Number 3 clamp and the intake lever for the cylinder Number 6. There must be a nominal clearance of 0.30 mm [0.012 in].
Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and animals. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.
