Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.
 WARNING 

Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and pets. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.
  • Drain the cooling system. Refer to Procedure 008-018 in Section 8.
  • Remove the upper radiator hose from the water outlet connection. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Remove the vent line. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • If required, remove the water outlet connection.

Remove the three capscrews that attach the thermostat housing to the rocker lever housing.

Remove the thermostat housing from the water transfer tube.

Remove the thermostat from the thermostat housing.

Inspect for Reuse

Inspect the thermostat seal and the thermostat housing gasket surface. Refer to Procedure 008-016 in Section 8.

Install

Be sure the thermostat seal is installed so the seal part number is visible. Refer to Procedure 008-016 in Section 8.

Install the thermostat into the thermostat bore.

Install o-rings onto each end of the coolant bypass tube.

Lubricate the o-rings with vegetable oil.

Install the coolant bypass tube into the water pump inlet connection, lining up the coolant bypass tube alignment tab with the notch in the water pump inlet connection.

Install the thermostat housing onto the coolant bypass tube.

Install the thermostat housing and thermostat housing gasket to the rocker housing with the three capscrews.

Tighten the capscrews.

Torque Value:  20  n.m  [177 in-lb]

Finishing Steps

 WARNING 

Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and pets. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.
  • Install the upper radiator hose and vent line. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Fill the cooling system. Refer to Procedure 008-018 in Section 8.
  • Operate the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.
