Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 008-082   Water Inlet Connection

WARNING  Do not remove the pressure cap from a hot engine. Wait until the coolant temperature is below 50°C [120°F] before removing the pressure cap. Heated coolant spray or steam can cause personal injury.

WARNING  Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children and pets. If not reused, dispose of in accordance with local environmental regulations.

• Remove the pressure cap when the engine is cool.
• Drain the cooling system. Refer to Procedure 008-018 in Section 8.
• If equipped, disconnect all OEM coolant lines. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Remove the coolant filter. Refer to Procedure 008-006 in Section 8.
• Remove the coolant filter head. Refer to Procedure 008-007 in Section 8.

Remove the coolant hoses.

Remove the three capscrews, water inlet connection, and o-ring.

Disconnect the water inlet connection from the coolant bypass tube and remove the o-ring.

Discard the o-rings.

WARNING  When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the possibility of personal injury.

WARNING  Some solvents are flammable and toxic. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before using.

Clean the water inlet connection with solvent.

Dry with compressed air.

Inspect the water inlet connection for cracks or other damage.

If the water inlet connection is damaged, it must be replaced.

Install a new o-ring into the groove of the water inlet connection.

Lubricate the o-ring with vegetable oil.

Install a new o-ring into the groove of the coolant bypass tube.

Lubricate the o-ring with vegetable oil.

Connect the inlet connection to the coolant bypass tube. Be sure not to roll the o-ring.

Slide the inlet connection onto the water pump. Be sure not to roll the o-ring.

Hand tighten the three capscrews.

Tighten the capscrews.

NOTE: If STOR plugs were removed, install the plugs and tighten to the following values.

• Install the coolant filter head. Refer to Procedure 008-007 in Section 8.
• Install the coolant filter. Refer to Procedure 008-006 in Section 8.
• If removed, connect all OEM coolant lines. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Fill the cooling system. Refer to Procedure 008-018 in Section 8.
• Install the pressure cap.
• Operate the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.
