Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 010-143   Air Shutoff Valve

Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Make sure the valve is in the closed position before you attempt to remove to prevent possible injury.
  • If necessary, disconnect the air compressor supply line from the air intake manifold. Refer to Procedure 012-024 in Section 12.
  • Remove the charge-air piping connecting to the air shutoff valve. Refer to the OEM service manual.

Remove

Make sure the keyswitch is in the OFF position.

Disconnect the air line at the air shutoff valve connector.

Mask the end of the air line to prevent contamination.

Disconnect the electrical connector at the air shutoff valve.

If applicable, remove the air shutoff valve support bracket capscrew from the air shutoff valve.

Completely loosen the rear air shutoff valve V-band clamp. Be sure to support the valve while loosening the clamp.

Remove the V-band clamp, o-ring, and air shutoff valve from the air intake manifold.

The charge-air cooler o-rings are reusable. Do not damage the o-rings when removing the valve, or when setting the assembly aside during repair.

Cover all open points on the air intake connection and cylinder head with caps and heavy tape from the Air Handling Clean Care Kit, Part Number 4919588.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

Inspect the o-rings for cuts, tears, wear, or other damage.

Replace any damaged parts.

Inspect the air shutoff valve for cracks or other damage.

Replace any damaged parts.

Install

Install the air shutoff valve to the air intake manifold. Orient the valve with the reset lever toward the rear of the engine.

Align and tighten the rear air shutoff valve V-band clamp. Be sure to support and align the valve so it does not contact any OEM components.

Tighten the capscrews

Torque Value:  8  n.m  [71 in-lb]

If applicable, install the air shutoff valve support bracket capscrew to the air shutoff valve.

Torque Value:

Capscrews  47  n.m  [35 ft-lb]
Torque Value:

Nut  20  n.m  [177 in-lb]

Connect the electrical connector to the air shutoff valve.

Connect the air line at the air shutoff valve connector.

Test

NOTE: Be sure to allow the engine to warm to operating temperature before testing the valve operation.

Test the air shutoff valve when installed on engine.

Start the engine and let it idle. Wait for engine to warm before activating the test switch.

Hold up on the air shutoff valve test switch, located in the vehicle cab, and raise the engine rpm.

If the air shutoff valve actuates properly, the engine will shut off.

After the valve activates, turn the keyswitch OFF and push the reset lever up to reset the valve. Only hand pressure must be used to reset the valve.

Finishing Steps
