Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Wear safety glasses or a face shield, as well as protective clothing, to reduce the possibility of personal injury when using a steam cleaner or high-pressure water.
 WARNING 

The differential pressure sensor tube can be hot. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, allow the engine to cool before removing.

NOTE: Brush away any loose dirt from around the area of the air handling connections to avoid contamination of the interior of the engine.

  • Use steam or high-pressure water to clean the engine, specifically around the EGR connection tube joints.
  • Remove the EGR valve. Refer to Procedure 011-022 in Section 11.
  • Remove the OEM hardware necessary to gain access to the EGR system hose. Refer to the OEM service manual.

 WARNING 

The EGR connection tubes can be hot. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, allow the engine to cool before removing.

Loosen the hose clamp on the inlet side of the EGR system hose.

Remove the EGR system hose from the rear EGR connection tube.

Discard the hose.

Use protective caps from the Air Handling Clean Care Kit, Part Number 4919799, to cover open points in the air handling system.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

Inspect the hose clamps for signs of overextension. The hose clamp must not be bent or cracked.

Inspect the hose clamps for thread damage.

Replace the hose clamps if any damage is found.

Install

Remove the protective caps from the Air Handling Clean Care Kit, Part Number 4919799, used to cover open points in the air handling system.

NOTE: Do not use Lubriplate™ or other petroleum based lubricants to install the hoses.

Apply a lubricant, such as clean engine coolant, soapy water, or vegetable oil, to the hose end of the rear EGR connection tube.

Loosely install the smaller hose clamp around the small side of the new EGR system hose.

Slide the small end of the new hose on to the exit side of the rear EGR connection tube. Be sure the hose is fully seated over the hose bead.

Loosely install the larger hose clamp around the large side of the EGR system hose.

Install the EGR valve. Refer to Procedure 011-022 in Section 11.

Use the alignment marks on the hose to position the clamps as shown in the illustration. Be sure the t-bolts are oriented the same way they were before removed.

Tighten the hose clamps.

Torque Value:  7  n.m  [62 in-lb]

Finishing Steps

  • Install all OEM hardware that was removed to gain access to the EGR system hose.  Refer to the OEM service manual
  • Operate the engine and check for leaks.
