1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. See ENGINE. Remove flywheel from the crankshaft.
See FLYWHEEL.
2. Remove crankshaft with pistons and connecting rods remaining in cylinder block. See CRANKSHAFT & MAIN BEARINGS under CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL.
3. Remove camshaft from cylinder block. See CAMSHAFT.
CAUTION: Protective tubing must be placed on connecting rod bolts to prevent damaging crankshaft during crankshaft removal and installation. Pistons must be pushed upward toward top of cylinder bore when servicing camshaft bearings. DO NOT allow piston to contact piston cooling oil jets when pushing piston to top of cylinder bore.
4. Push piston upward toward top of cylinder bore. DO NOT damage piston cooling oil jets when pushing piston upward in cylinder bore.
5. Assemble the Camshaft Service Set (303-017, T65L-6250-A). Wrap a cloth around the threads of the puller screw to protect the front camshaft bearing or camshaft bearing bore.
6. Tighten the pulling nut against the thrust bearing and pulling plate to remove the camshaft bearing. Make sure to hold a wrench on the end of the puller screw to prevent it from turning.
7. Using the camshaft bearing set, select the correct size expanding collet and backup nut and assemble on the expanding mandrel.
8. With the expanding collet collapsed, install the collet assembly in the camshaft bearing, and tighten the backup nut on the expanding mandrel until the collet fits the camshaft bearing.
Repeat the procedure for each camshaft bearing. To remove the front camshaft bearing, install the puller screw from the rear of the cylinder block.
