Excessive end clearance can be caused by a damaged thrust bearing on the camshaft.

Use this procedure to measure the camshaft end clearance. If the end clearance is not within the specifications given, the cause of the excessive end clearance must be repaired.

Remove the rocker lever cover. Refer to Procedure 003-011 in Section 3.

Loosen the locknut and turn out the adjusting screw on each valve rocker lever. The overhead load on the camshaft must be released to allow free movement of the camshaft.

It is not necessary to remove the push rods or push tubes.

Remove the front gear cover. Refer to Procedure 001-031 in Section 1.

Push the front camshaft gear toward the rear of the engine, to position the camshaft as far as possible toward the rear of the engine.

Set up a dial indicator gauge, Part No. 3376050, and extension, Part No. ST-537-4  to the front gear housing or cylinder block. Place the tip of the indicator on the face of the front camshaft gear.

Set the dial indicator to zero.

Pull the front camshaft gear toward the front of the engine, to position the camshaft as far as possible toward the front of the engine.

Record the measurement on the dial indicator.

Camshaft End Clearance

If the camshaft end clearance does not meet the above specification, the camshaft thrust bearing must be inspected. Refer to Procedure 001-056 in Section 1.

Adjust the overhead. Refer to Procedure 003-004 in Section 3.

Install the rocker lever cover.  Refer to Procedure 003-011 in Section 3.

Install the front gear cover.  Refer to Procedure 001-031 in Section 1.
