Symptom Tree  t103-56

This is symptom tree t103-56
Cause Correction

Verify the plugged lubricating oil filter complaint

Measure the differential pressure drop across the lubricating oil filter. Refer to
Procedure 007-095 in Section 7.

Lubricating oil does not meet specifications for operating conditions

Change the oil and filters. Refer to Procedure 007-013,
Procedure 007-037, and
Procedure 007-083 in Section 7. Refer to Cummins® Engine Oil and Oil Analysis Recommendations, Bulletin
3810340 and
Procedure 018-003 in Section V of the Operation and Maintenance Manual, ISX11.9 CM2250, Bulletin 2883444.

Lubricating oil drain interval missed or is exceeded based on duty cycle, or oil and filter combination

Change the oil and filters. Refer to Procedure 007-013 and
Procedure 007-037 in Section 7. Review the oil change interval. Refer to
Procedure 102-002 in Section 2 in Operation and Maintenance Manual, ISX11.9 CM2250, Bulletin 2883444.

Engine has history of missed or excessive oil drain intervals

Change the oil and filter. Refer to Procedure 007-013 and
Procedure 007-037 in Section 7. Clean any contaminated residual engine oil from the oil pan and cylinder head. Return the engine to operation. Repeat, if necessary, to reach a full oil drain interval.

Refer to the Lubricating Oil Contaminated symptom tree, if an inspection reveals contamination.

Fuel grade is not correct for the application or the fuel quality is poor

Refer to Procedure 018-002 in Section V in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, ISX11.9 CM2250, Bulletin 2883444.

Combustion gas contamination

Check for excessive engine blowby. Refer to
Procedure 014-010 in Section 14
. If crankcase gases are excessive, refer to the Crankcase Gases (Blowby) Excessive symptom tree.

Injector(s) are malfunctioning

Perform diagnostics to find the damaged injector(s). Replace the injector(s) as necessary. Refer to Procedure 006-026 in Section 6. Use Guided Step 4 in the Engine Performance Troubleshooting Tree in Section TT. Return the engine to operation.

First investigated instance of premature filter plugging

For the first investigated instance of premature filter plugging, perform the appropriate corrections in the steps above and STOP. Return the engine to operation. For repeat instances without improvement, measure and record the pressure drop across the filter. Verify the completion of the steps above and continue to the next steps.

Lubricating oil is contaminated with coolant or fuel with no clear visual indication

Review the customer oil analysis records, if available. If no recent oil analysis results are available, perform an oil analysis to identify potential contamination.

Engine timing incorrect

Check the engine base timing and adjust the overhead. Refer to Procedure 001-088 in Section 1 and
Procedure 003-004 in Section 3. Return the engine to operation. If no improvement, request additional Cummins Inc. technical assistance before continuing to the next step.
