Cummins ISX11.9 CM2250 – Service Manual 020-012   Engine Brake Solenoid Valve

The ISX11.9 CM2250 is available with either a 12 volt or 24 volt electrical system. These systems use different engine brake solenoid valves. The 24 volt solenoid valve has one terminal and is grounded to the body of the solenoid. The 12 volt solenoid valve has two terminals and is grounded to the wiring harness.

Remove

Use an internal Torx™ wrench to disconnect the engine brake wiring harness from the solenoid.

Remove the solenoid from the manifold.

Do not remove the two solenoid o-rings.

Inspect the o-rings for damage. If the o-rings can not be reused, replace the solenoid assembly.

Inspect for Reuse

NOTE: The ISX11.9 CM2250 engine is available with either a 12 volt or 24 volt electrical system.  These systems use different engine brake solenoid valves.  The 24 volt solenoid valve has one terminal and is grounded to the body of the solenoid. The 12 volt solenoid valve has two terminals and is grounded to the wiring harness.

Measure the resistance of each solenoid with the wiring harness disconnected from the solenoid.

If equipped with a 12 volt system, measure the resistance between the terminals.

  • Cold Engine (25°C [77°F]) – 8 to 10 ohms
  • Hot Engine (121°C [250°F]) – 16 to 20 ohms

If equipped with a 24 volt system, measure the resistance between the terminal and solenoid body.

  • 32.6 to 39.8 ohms

Check the operation of the pin assembly.

  • Remove the inlet screen.
  • Hold the solenoid with an index finger on the button and a thumb on the bottom pin.
  • Alternately push on the button and pin. The pin and button should move together freely.

Check that the screen is not damaged.

Check both terminals for wear and damage.

Replace the solenoid if the measurements are not within specifications.

Install

Lubricate the seal rings with clean engine oil.

Coat the inside of the manifold with oil.

Press the solenoid into the manifold.

Tighten the capscrew.

Torque Value:  13  n.m  [115 in-lb]

Connect the engine brake wiring harness to the solenoid.

Tighten the Torx™ nuts.

Torque Value:  2  n.m  [18 in-lb]
